Real Patients, Real Stories: One Patient’s Gender-Affirming Journey (Part Two)
At Restore Medical Center, we understand the importance of representation. When it comes to the joys and challenges that come along with gender-affirming healthcare, real stories from real patients matter.
This is the second half of a two-part interview with one of our very own patients. Missed the first part? Read it here.
5. How has your life changed since undergoing gender-affirming surgery?
Since undergoing gender-affirming surgery, my life has changed in ways that are hard to put into words. It’s a deeply personal experience—almost like a gift I’ve given to myself.
There are so many new feelings, both physically and emotionally. It’s not just about how I look, but how I feel within my own body. Right now, I’m still adjusting, still discovering what this new chapter means for me. It’s something so personal that I don’t even know how to fully describe it yet—but I do know that it’s different, and it’s mine.
6. What has been the most rewarding part of your recovery process so far?
The most rewarding part of my recovery process has been the incredible support from the people around me—my circle of friends and family. They’ve shown me just how much they care, not just with words, but through their actions.
They’ve been there for me every step of the way—coming over to check on me, staying by my side, making sure I have everything I need. Whether it’s picking up food from Publix or reminding me to take care of myself, their support has made all the difference.
Seeing how much love and care surrounds me has been truly special. It’s not just about healing physically—it’s about knowing I have people in my life who are here for me, no matter what.
7. How has your relationship with your body evolved since the surgery?
My relationship with my body has evolved in ways I never expected. At first, I had moments of doubt and uncertainty—it was a big change, and adjusting wasn’t always easy. But over time, I’ve started to feel more and more comfortable in my own skin.
Now, I feel like a completely new person, and it’s one of the best things that has ever happened to me. There’s still an ongoing process of understanding and embracing this change, but overall, I feel happier and more connected to myself than ever before.
8. What are your hopes and goals for the future now that you’ve had gender-affirming surgery?
My primary goal is to support others who are going through similar experiences and help guide them to the right resources. I feel like I’ve already prepared myself for this journey, but I know there’s still work to be done. We have to continue fighting for gender-affirming care and rights because the future is uncertain, and we need to ensure these opportunities remain available. It’s like a domino effect—securing and maintaining access to gender-affirming care not only impacts me but also helps countless others who are on this path. I know there are more people out there who need this support, and I want to be there for them.
9. What advice would you give to someone considering gender-affirming surgery?
My advice would be to go through the proper channels and make sure you’re fully informed. It’s important to take your time and be absolutely sure this is what you want. I remember my doctor emphasizing this when I first consulted with him—he made it clear that this is a deeply personal decision, and you need to be certain it’s right for you. Make sure it’s the right time for YOU, and don’t let anyone pressure you into it. Equally important is finding the right surgeon or medical team who understands your needs and makes you feel comfortable. Lastly, check in with yourself: How do you feel about this step? If it feels right and aligns with your goals, then that’s a good sign.
10. How do you hope your story will impact others in the LGBTQ+ community or those considering similar procedures?
I hope my story encourages others to take the time to be sure about their decisions. It’s important to fully understand what you’re committing to and to feel confident in your choice. I also want to emphasize the importance of being healthy—both physically and mentally—before undergoing any procedures. It’s crucial to surround yourself with supportive people who truly understand and respect your journey. Being true to yourself and following your own path is what matters most. If my story can help even one person feel more confident or informed, that would mean a lot to me.
11. Why did you choose Restore Medical Center, and what are your thoughts on your results?
I chose Restore Medical Center and Dr. Whitehead because I felt a strong sense of trust and confidence in their care. From the moment I walked in, I felt comfortable and reassured—like I was in the right place. Dr. Whitehead took the time to have meaningful conversations with me, and I could tell he genuinely cared about my well-being. I’ve tried other providers in the past, but I didn’t feel the same level of trust or connection. With Dr. Whitehead, I feel like my body is in good hands, and that’s incredibly important to me. As for my results, I’m honestly so happy. I feel like myself in a way I’ve always wanted, and that’s a truly amazing feeling.
