Part Two: Gender-Affirming Care as a Pivotal Step in One Patient’s Journey

A part of our Real Patients, Real Stories series

We love sharing real-life patient stories here at Restore Medical Center. One of our patients generously shared their first-hand experience working with Dr. John Whitehead, Dr. Alain Ramirez, and their supportive team before, during, and after their gender-affirming surgery.

This is the second half of a two-part interview. Missed the first part? Read it here.

How has your life changed since gender-affirming surgery?

The most profound change is finally feeling at home in my own body. That constant discomfort of seeing something that didn’t belong—it’s gone. Now, when I look down, everything looks and feels the way it always should have. The difference in my confidence and happiness is incredible. Before surgery, my body felt like an enemy; now we’re allies. While milestones like marriage and parenthood changed my life, this transformation was different—it healed a fundamental disconnect I’d carried for years. I’m not just living as myself now—I’m thriving as the person I was always meant to be.

What has been the most rewarding part of your recovery?

The most rewarding moment came at the three-month mark, just as Dr. Whitehead promised. While I knew recovery would take time, seeing everything finally settle into place—looking so natural and exactly as it should—was profoundly affirming. Even right after surgery, the results were better than I’d imagined, but by three months? It was like my body had always been this way. That alignment between how I’d always seen myself and what I now see in the mirror? That’s the gift I’ll carry forever.

How has your relationship with your body evolved since surgery?

Before surgery, looking at my body felt like confronting a stranger—an existence that never matched who I knew myself to be. I’d avoid mirrors, avoid touching myself, because every glance was a reminder of that disconnect. Now? I finally recognize the person I see. My reflection aligns with the self I’ve carried in my mind for decades. It’s not just physical change—it’s the profound relief of being fully seen, inside and out. The best part? No more flinching. No more dread. Just… me.

What advice would you give someone considering gender-affirming surgery?

Be patient—with the process, with your body, and with yourself. This journey isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon where every step prepares you for that life-changing moment. Yes, there will be hurdles and moments of doubt, but trust the timeline. Follow your surgical team’s guidance like it’s your roadmap—because it is. When you finally get there? You’ll realize the wait was just making sure you were ready to meet yourself fully.

How do you hope your story impacts others?

I want to be a bridge—between fear and understanding, between uncertainty and hope. For those considering surgery: may my journey calm your nerves and remind you that joy awaits on the other side of this process. For society: may it prove that we’re just people seeking to live authentically. At work, when my manager shared her surprise that no customers reacted negatively to me, it confirmed a truth—visibility matters. Every time someone meets a happy, thriving trans person, it chips away at fear. That’s why I share my story: not because it’s extraordinary, but because its very ordinariness—my humanity—is what changes minds and opens doors for others.

Why did you choose Dr. Whitehead and Restore Medical Center in Miami? How do you feel about your results?

Two factors made Restore stand out: Dr. Whitehead’s exceptional team and their seamless insurance process. From the moment I walked in, Nicole, Michelle, and the entire staff made me feel genuinely cared for—not just as a patient, but as a person. That human connection eased every anxiety. Then there’s Rizwan, the “insurance magician” who worked miracles to make this accessible.

The true test came post-op. This team didn’t just perform surgery; they provided unwavering aftercare—even Dr. Whitehead checking in on holidays. My results? Beyond what I hoped for. Every detail confirms I made the right choice. If you’re considering gender-affirming surgery, not consulting with Restore would be a missed opportunity. Their combination of surgical excellence and heartfelt care is rare—and life-changing.
